BEVERLY JOHNSON

The American supermodel Beverly Johnson is an original and a history making model. She is a cover girl, spokesperson, actress and successful entrepreneur.

Beverly Johnson was born on October 13, 1952 in Buffalo, New York. A champion swimmer, she was blessed with an apparent great beauty. While a student of criminal justice at Northeastern University in 1970, her college friends suggested to Beverly that she should become a model. Inspired by the accomplishments of other black models like Naomi Sims and Donyale Luna, she decided to give it a try and quickly found work.

Backed by Eileen Ford at the powerful Ford Models, Johnson made history by becoming the first African-American model to get the cover of the American edition of Vogue. Since that historic feat in August 1974, she has gone on to appear on the cover of more than 500 magazines around the world.

Beverly Johnson went on to make history again a year later, but this time abroad. In 1975, she became the first black woman to appear on the cover of the French edition of Elle magazine. She went on to score other covers for prestigious magazines such as Glamour, Essence and Cosmopolitan. Beverly scored thousands of editorial pages in hundreds of magazines and hundreds of advertisement campaigns. And she walked the runways for the biggest fashion houses in the business on both sides of the Atlantic.

Over her career, she became a recognized star both in the USA and on an international scale. And as one of the biggest models of the 1970s and 1980s. She opened doors for future supermodels like Iman, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks.

Her modelling career also opened many a lucrative door for her. She began writing and acting. She made her acting debut in the 1976 film, Deadly Hero. Since that time, she has made countless appearances on both the silver and small screens.

As a spokesperson, Beverly endorsed countless products for general consumption, but also those destined to African-Americans. With her face attached to a product, it was sure that it would sell. Today, Beverly has her own wig and hair extensions collections. She also has an Eyewear line and a hair care company. ...
