TATA VARDANASHVILI FALLS SHORT OF TRUE POTENTIAL

By Marcellous L.

Tbilisi, Georgia - Tata Vardanashvili is a prime example of the young designer whose work you really want to like. However, there is always that little something that prevents you from logically falling in love with the work.

Vardanashvili presented for Fall Winter 2010 a collection of feminine silhouettes that are sure to please more than one person. With a spirit of Baroque fueling the silhouettes, the designer drew upon lace appliqués, crystals, jet motifs and a bit of ruffles to make her story known. Womanly in every way possible, the looks are often accented with integrated belts. Ethnic appliqués in colorful yarns and strings are used to embellish the backs of here coats and the fronts of dresses. The most intriguing of her looks is possible her black dinner coat in silk. The sleeves are pulled up, leather is integrated into the back shoulders and brilliant studs are used to finish the look.

As clearly stated by the presentation of the collection, the designer has very strong ideas and flirts quite easily with the establishment of her own individual identity. There can be no fault found there. However at times, the designer seemed to lose her focus and that was visibly translated into the finished work. This unfortunately resulted in some pieces not being as well made as they could or should have been.

The obvious solution is to create fewer pieces for the collection in order for the others to receive the attention that they need in terms of finishing and most importantly on the cut which directly determines the manner in which the garments fall upon the body.
