Atlanta, Georgia - Ever thought about becoming a farmer? What about a Lumberjack? No? Well, me neither. But with Atlantans from all around the city being spotted wearing everything from flannel shirts, to flannel skirts, to the ever present flannel scarf, this seems to be among the dominate styles that have blown into the city for the winter.
Originating in16th Century Wales, flannel has become a fashion statement among many musical artists. In the early 1990s, Nirvana’s wearing of it defined the look of the grunge movement. It too was worn as a fashion statement by West Coast gangsta rappers such as Snoop Dogg (above). Classic brands such as Lee and Wrangler have made the flannel shirt a staple clothing item for many trendsetters looking to take a different road in fashion. And more recently, such famous labels as Ralph Lauren and Ben Sherman have taken the look to a totally different level by adding their high-end fashion twist to the classic garment.
MY STYLE PICKS
Men, for the perfect combination, pair a vintage flannel shirt with a boot cut pair of Levi jeans and a hot pair of Vans sneakers or Chuck Taylor’s for the grunge look. For women, try a fitted flannel shirt with a centered belt just below the bosom, a nice Skinny Jean from Express, and a nice a knee- high boot from Aldo. For an excellent deal (and definitely a cheap price on vintage flannel in the area, try the Lucky Exchange in Midtown Atlanta, or Last Chance Thrift Store in downtown Decatur, Georgia and which happens to be one of my shopping stops. There you can find vintage flannels starting from only $2.99!
Remember, however you choose to wear it, keep it Atlanta savvy and chic!
