Paris , France – French fashion house Christian Dior has had to remove from the Chinese market all campaigns featuring Sharon Stone. This comes amid a backlash of furor against the Hollywood actress following comments she made in regards to the massive earthquake in mainland China which killed or left missing more than 88 thousand people.
Stone made her ill-timed comments a week following the May 12 th earthquake. "I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else”, she said. “And then all this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and I thought, is that karma — when you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?
Christian Dior chose Stone in 2005 to represent its new line of skin care products in a worldwide print and television campaign. Stone, in her mid forties, was chosen because she is versatile, youthful, and has a diverse fan base. Until these comments, her work with Dior had been well received and celebrated around the world.
The response to her remarks have been overwhelming, and despite several apologies, Chinese officials and residents have made it clear that they will start boycotting her and her work. And Dior China is the latest to get involved in the controversy. As a result, it will be removing all advertisements as well as any images of Sharon Stone in current and future advertising, marketing and commercial activities. Dior China has made it clear their reasoning behind doing so is that they do not wish to have their label embroiled in further tensions or associated with Stone’s comments made about the tragic disaster.
