Paris, France – Twelve years after the last visit of a French head of state to the United Kingdom, the Sarkozys arrived yesterday and brought with them a media storm.
The celebrity couple of French Nicolas Sarkozy and his former supermodel wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, were greeted at Heathrow Airport by Prince Charles of Wales and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall upon their arrival to the United Kingdom. The world watched as Prince Charles greeted Mme. Sarkozy with a kiss to the hand.
All the serious newspapers as well as the top celebrity and tabloid publications sent photographers to cover the arrival. Not since President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy has such a fuss been created around the arrival of a foreign head of state. And Carla Bruni-Sarkozy played her part to perfection. She was dressed in a belted grey coat by Christian Dior. She accessorized the look with a pillbox hat, black gloves and a black handbag. Her style is obviously a throwback to the elegance championed by the former American First Lady Jackie O.
The only flaw in Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy’s attire was the near flat shoes that she wore. An obvious ploy to make the her more “First Lady-like”, the shoes were a hideous and out-of-step eyesore and did nothing for her. Perfectly able to excel in her duties as the president’s wife, she must be careful to not neglect the fact that she is one of the world’s most beautiful and stylish women. And ugly shoes will do nothing to change that fact! Other First Ladies have successfully performed their duties without sacrificing style.
