Designer Courtney Washington in Atlanta

By Karen Larde

March 5, 2007

Atlanta, USA - New York based fashion designer, Courtney Washington, made a recent trip to Atlanta during fashion week to attend the market at The Americasmart, located at 240 Peachtree Street in Atlanta Georgia.

Recently launching the opening of his atelier in New York, his visit to Atlanta, coined
the "city too busy too hate", included a stop at Clark Atlanta University's Fashion Design and Merchandising department.

The department, along with its first lady, Angel Broadnax, hosted its first inaugural fashion designer lecture series, which saluted the works of Mr. Courtney Washington. The event at the Atlanta University Center which includes Morehouse College, Spelman the International Theology Center and the Morehouse School of Medicine, was topped off with an invitation-only reception held at the home of Mrs. Broadnax.

Washington, who is a native of Kingston, Jamaica studied fashion design at both the Fashion Institute of Technology and Pratt Institute. He has designed for entertainers such as Roberta Flack and Angie Stone. The designer whose design aesthetic consists of architecturally cut and body flattering clothing is skilled and involved in every phase of the garment production process. When asked about his current collection, Courtney would tell you his garments are made to take the modern woman from a daytime look to an evening look. The inspiration for his designs comes from his worldly travels with garment detailing of natural custom made buttons in wood. His eclectic use of fabrics seems to be the success behind many of his collections. "If you were to see my workroom, you would think I was a fabric producer", the designer says noting his love for good quality fabrics.

The Courtney Washington collection is available at fine stores such as Nordstroms (West Coast), Off-Broadway, and Grandview in New York.
