Los Angeles, CA – The 79th Academy Awards have finally come and gone. This year saw the ultimate consecration for first time winners in the biggest categories.
Martin Scorsese finally won his long overdue trophy for Best Director for his work on The Departed. Forest Whitaker walked away with Best Actor for his performance in The Last King of Scotland.
The British actress, Helen Mirren, beat off stiff competition for a win as Best Actress in the film, The Queen. Mirren’s year is the best for any actress since Halle Berry’s win at the Oscars several years ago. Like Berry, Mirren had picked up prior to the Oscars important victories for best actress at practically every other leading award shows including the Golden Globes.
Newcomer Jennifer Hudson captured an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her first big screen performance in the film Dream Girls. And Al Gore became the first former Vice-President to win an Oscar. His victory came in the Best Documentary Feature category for the film, An Inconvenient Truth.
